How Should I Approach Camera Clipping

As someone incredibly new to programming in a 3D environment, I have just built a basic 3D movement and camera control and am now looking into two areas of design: Platforming, which I believe will be relatively simple, and Camera Clipping, which I have no idea as to where to start from. If someone could give me a few rules of thumb and guidelines to base my attempts at building the Camera system on, I'd greatly appreciate it. Thank you for your time.
